Q. What is offered during the 11+ and Entrance Exam course?

 

A. The 11+ and Entrance Exam course progresses through the following areas in order to prepare our students for the entrance exams they wish to take:

• Numerical Reasoning

• Maths

• English

• Verbal Reasoning 

• Non-Verbal Reasoning

 

We focus on a clear delivery of content, considerable practice to consolidate new knowledge and revision of challenging topics.

Q. Why prepare for the 11+ or an Entrance Exam?

 

A. Preparation is absolutely vital for success in the 11+. A pressured exam at the mere age of 10 or 11 needs to be adequately prepared for, so that students can walk into the exam room with confidence and the reassurance that they know how the exam will work. The content of the 11+ or any entrance exam is often unfamiliar, difficult and unlike anything that primary school children have seen before. This means that preparation for the style of the exam is absolutely crucial to ensure that your child can fulfil their academic potential. 

 

It is not only the style of the exam that is a challenge for the students, but the exam itself: strict time conditions; the use of new exam techniques; an unfamiliar location and having to complete a multiple-choice answer grid or a separate answer booklet.

 

Any exam or interview will yield better results if adequately prepared for and an entrance exam is no different.

 

Q. Who is the Gifted Thinkers 11+ and Entrance Exam plan suitable for?

 

A. The Gifted Thinkers 11+ and Entrance Exam plan is suitable for any student preparing for the 11+ or an entrance exam in Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

We provide tailored support for the CEM and GL styles of assessment widely used within Trafford and Greater Manchester. We also support children hoping to attend an Independent School.

Q. Do you assess the students?

 

A. We assess our 11+ and Entrance Exam children informally and formally throughout the course. For informal progress, often the students do not realise we are analysing their progress. We do assess them more formally in order to adhere to our ethos of instilling exam technique from their first session with us. 

 

We believe in helping our students to become more familiar with the exam format so that the entrance exam is not as daunting on the day. If we formally assess your child, we will always provide formal feedback to you on their progress and academic performance.

Q. What is offered in Gifted Thinkers English lessons?

 

A. In our Gifted Thinkers English lessons, we provide specialised support on both English Literature and English Language and aid our students in becoming fluent readers, writers and verbal articulators.

 

We help our students in developing a fully-fledged understanding of both English Language and English Literature and guide them to become Creative Writers and Critical Readers. In their English tuition sessions, students learn to write accurately, persuasively and with a plethora of literary techniques and vocabulary, suited to the genre of the text. We embolden our students to ask critical questions of the text at hand and understand, from a young age, the power of words. As a direct result of our English tuition, our students can read complex texts with rigour and confidence.

A. We assess our students informally in order to effectively monitor their progress in the key development areas of English Literature and English Language.

 

If we formally assess your child, we will always provide formal feedback to you on their progress and academic performance.

 

Q. Who is the Gifted Thinkers English plan suitable for?

 

A. Gifted Thinkers English lessons are suitable for any student wanting to improve and perfect their verbal and written English and receive individual attention on problematic subject areas. We are happy to provide a bespoke course tailored to the needs of your child, building their confidence in English Literature and English Language.

Q. I would like my child to cover English and Maths with their Gifted Thinkers tutor. Is this possible in their 1-hour session?

 

A. Of course, we offer a Gifted Thinkers Maths & English Plan in which we split the tuition time equally between Maths and English. We understand that many students may need support in both of these subjects, therefore we provide a tailored programme that allows students to develop their Maths and English skills simultaneously.

Q. What is offered in Gifted Thinkers Spanish lessons?

 

A. Our talented Spanish tutor creates dynamic and engaging Spanish lessons for our students that cover the essential skill sets for learning a language:

• Listening

• Reading

• Speaking

• Writing

 

In our lessons, we complete a wide range of activities including translation, vocabulary building, grammar learning activities, reading Spanish texts, listening to Spanish and speaking activities.

 

We adapt our activities depending on the age we are teaching. For example, for younger students, we develop more interactive activities to keep them engaged.

Q. Do you need previous knowledge of Spanish in order to select the Gifted Thinkers Spanish tuition plan?

 

A. Not at all, our classes can be tailored to any level of Spanish language that our students already have; they could be a complete novice or an A level student preparing for their final exams. We encourage all of our Gifted Thinkers students to learn a foreign language due to the numerous benefits it has for their academic progress and cultural awareness.

 

Q. My child really wants to learn Spanish more seriously but gets very nervous speaking. What would you suggest?

 

A. It is always nerve-racking trying to do something new and unfamiliar but at Gifted Thinkers, we help our students to embrace challenge and have a go at everything. With regular practice, speaking another language becomes far easier and more familiar. Students cannot improve in a foreign language without speaking it—so we encourage our students to overcome their nerves in this skill set.

A. The Gifted Thinkers Spanish plan is suitable for any student wanting to considerably improve their knowledge and practical use of Spanish. Whether it is specific preparation for an exam or for a more personal reason such as plans to move abroad, our bespoke plans can be adapted to suit the requirements of our clients.

A. Our Gifted Thinkers tutors deliver engaging content during our Maths lessons, working on the areas found most challenging by our students. We provide specialised support on the National Curriculum and beyond and we deliver our tuition in an adaptable style that moulds itself to the needs of our students and the way they think as individuals. 

 

We provide the stepping stones for our students to progress significantly beyond the learning outcomes of their class and the set targets of the National Curriculum. We also contextualise our Maths questions where possible, so that our students can understand how their Maths skills can be applied to real-life scenarios.
